Richard gave us something to think about as he pondered about the economic immigrant status of various people including the current UK Prime Minister and the newly appointed First Minister of Scotland before regaling us with the history of John James Hughes (1814-1889), a Welsh engineer, businessman and ultimately the founder of the city of Donetsk in the Ukraine.
Donetsk had originally been a village named Yuzovka (Hughesovka in Russian) named after Hughes ("Yuz" being a Russian approximation of Hughes) before becoming a town in May 1917 and was later renamed Stalino in 1924.
In 1961, by now a city, its name was changed to Donetsk.
Fascinating. Who knew?
