1915 - a Local family meet an escaped German POW

Rotarians Club of Llandudno gathered with friends for a talk by our Rtn Sarah Lesiter-Burgess.

In August 1915 3 POW’s escaped from the camp in Abergele. Unable to secure their escape via a U-boat off the Great Orme, they surrendered after 3 days.

Sarah’s Nain: Beti Davies nee Jones was 13 months old when one of the POW’s hid his 1914 Iron cross in her pram.

Sarah shared the story via her Nain’s handwritten letter to a 1977 article covering the escape. Sadly, Sarah’s Nain died before sending her letter and giving a talk on the subject. The iron cross lay wrapped up and the story untold.

It was therefore poignant to all present that Sarah brought her husband and parents to hear her deliver what her Nain had hoped to do and to listen to a fascinating piece of local history.
