Pigeons
Carnforth rotarian, Doug Taylor, gave a fascinating talk on life with racing pigeons.
He explained that today’s pigeons were originally bred down from Rock Doves which couldn’t race very well. However, they have now been so finely bred that they can fly up to 375 miles in one day.
In 1887 there were 300 pigeon racing clubs in England rising to approximately 1500 clubs now.
Doug first got involved with racing pigeons in 1973, when numbered rings were used and the pigeon return times had to be manually timed and recorded using a mechanical clock. Nowadays, they land on an electric pad which records the time etc and goes to the main database.
Racing pigeons can vary in price the highest being a racing pigeon which was recently sold to a fancier in Japan for £72,000.
