District 1190 Technology Tournament
Yesterday evening, Carnforth Rotarian Trevor Blease, gave a very interesting insight to the Technology Tournament. It is an annual event, held across GB and Ireland for 11 to 18 year olds. There are 3 levels of difficulty, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced with the tasks varying each year.
The tasks which originate in Yorkshire, fit neatly in with STEM subjects, so are a valuable experience for pupils.
District 1190 (Lancashire and Cumbria) has the most people involved, with 7 venues hosting over 200 teams to touch the lives of over 1,000 youngsters. The tasks involve the first half hour of working as a team, reading the brief, designing and planning before they can begin on the construction. Throughout the morning there is a hive of activity of making, testing, improving. Mid afternoon is judgement time, where all of the constructions are tested, portfolios scrutinised, before the winning team is announced.
At the end of his talk, Trevor gave our members a brief, and approx 5 minutes, to come up with a design for a rocket launcher. It’s a pity we didn’t have the time or materials to make it.
Many thanks go to everyone who makes this event a huge success.
