Yesterday evening Carnforth Rotarian, David Alexander, gave some interesting insights and gruesome details to dangers and safety when mountaineering in adverse conditions.
He told us to stand still with both feet on the ground then sit down if caught in severe gusts of wind. Not that we will be mountaineering in the near or distant future. If you fall you should roll over onto your front and put your legs behind your knees to keep the crampons out of the way. Also, if slipping down a snow face, to grab the ice axe, which should always be attached to your wrist, and tuck it under your arm with the point into the snow and put as much weight on it as possible.
We were then informed of a couple of tragedies which occurred in Scotland. One where a bothy (an uninhabited, unfurnished shelter) was very difficult to find in good conditions, but impossible to find in bad conditions. A party of six public school boys and their master had taken the known descent down a mountain, been caught in a blizzard and were unable to find the bothy thus dying from hypothermia. The court ruled that the bothy was dangerous and was consequently knocked down.
Another time, pre mobile phone era, two groups got split up because of a misunderstanding of who was getting off the train at a certain halt and the fact that they missed receiving a severe weather warning.
