Professional and International Golfer
Gary Wolstenholme, who was brought up in Grange-0ver-Sands, visited Carnforth Rotary on Thursday evening as guest speaker. He spoke about his golfing career which began at the age of 7, following in the footsteps of his father, Guy Wolstenholme. Gary, who was good friends with Justin Rose, took a career path which eventually overtook the achievements of father.
He had a handicap of 23 at the age of 18, and caddied the European Tour, which fuelled his desire to improve his golf. He won the Keighley Cup but pure determination took him onto winning many competitions, including National Events.
All in all, he had a very successful career, having his first cap for England in 1988 and going on to represent England a total of 218 times before ending this aspect of his golfing life in 2008.
He won the Amateur Championship twice and 74 tournaments, turning professional in 2010.
He was awarded an MBE, is in the Hall of Fame as part of the Great Britain and Ireland Team.
He also does coaching and told our fellow golfers “Never to take your eye off the ball.”
We also welcomed Ken Smith from Newton-le-Willows Rotary club.
