Goodbye Chris Cutting

The Rotary Club of Taunton is sad to report the passing of an outstanding Rotarian, Chris Cutting, who exemplified the Rotary mantra of Service Before Self

The Rotary Club of Taunton has said farewell to one of its most esteemed members, Chris Cutting, who  passed away earlier this year. There will be a Celebration of Chris's life at Taunton Racecourse on Friday 4th September between 12.30 and 4pm. This is not a Rotary event but is being organised by close friends of Chris. It is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Booking is essential. Lunch will be provided (cost £20). Please contact Julie Smalley who will provide further information and details of how to pay by emailing celebratingcj@yahoo.com.

Born in South India, Chris’s early life was shaped by his father’s work as a Medical Superintendent and surgeon at a small Christian hospital in Chickballapur. His education at Eltham College and later at Edinburgh University, where he earned his medical degree and fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons, laid the foundation for his distinguished career in medicine at Musgrove Park Hospital.

In the 1960s, Chris married Jean, a trained nurse, and together they served at mission hospitals in Nazareth and South India before Chris took up a pivotal role at Musgrove in Taunton in 1972. His leadership in emergency medicine, included his tenure as National President of the British Association of Emergency Medicine from 1995 to 1998.

Chris Cutting’s journey with the Rotary Club began in 1976. His leadership in initiatives that have transformed lives and his ability to navigate complex challenges have left an indelible mark both locally and globally. He was Club President in 1976 and an Assistant District Governor for Rotary District 1200.

Chris’s contributions extended beyond medicine and Rotary. He has amongst other things, served as President of the League of Friends of Musgrove Park Hospital, Vice President of Cancer Research UK Taunton, Governor at Queen's College, Trustee of Taunton Heritage Trust and Taunton Food Bank, and a dedicated supporter of the United Reformed Church.

The Rotary Club of Taunton salutes his selflessness, leadership, and enduring commitment to service. His legacy, woven into the fabric of the club, will continue to inspire future generations of Rotarians.
