Wells & Mendip Museum on the Cathedral Green in Wells tells the story of the Mendip landscape and its inhabitants. Exhibits include a large collection of geological specimens as well as archaeological and social history artefacts. Opened in 2024, two new galleries tell the story of the City of Wells through the ages.
Earlier this yeat the Museum Trustees supported by Wells Rotary called out to the local artist community to help raise funds to continue to develop the museum's exhibition spaces and maintain its beautiful building and collections.
The request was to supply 3 postcard sized unframed pieces of art in any medium with pieces welcome from all ages, from beginner to professional. All submissions were available throughout February for viewing and offer in a silent auction hosted on this web site and were then displayed in the Museum Lecture Hall the week of 20th February. A selection of 15 items were then subject to sale by auction at a recption hosted by Wells Rotary at the Museum at the end of the week.
Subject to the submitting artists' consent, the remaiming unsold items will be displayed later in the year at the Museum and available for prchase on a first come first basis at £20 an item.
Our thanks go to all who supported the exhibition and auction. which to date has raised over £5,000 in support of the Museum, helping ensure that it survives and thrives.
Well over 350 items of art were donated to the exhibition. The selection of items shown below is taken from some of the higher value iyems sold at auction. It illustrated impressively the breadth quality of submoissions from the local artist community. Thankyou.
