Station Manager Graham Harris and his colleagues hosted a team from Hadleigh Castle Rotary to view the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) Station on Canvey Island. Located close to The island Yacht Club the station is ideally located for views of the coast from Canvey to Benfleet Leigh Chalkwell and as far as Southend Pier.
Manned entirely by volunteers the station monitors the busy Thames shipping lanes and watches for small boats and other craft as well as other users of the water who are in trouble. If an incident is spotted or reported an immediate alert is sent to the Coastguard HQ at Dover who will then instruct the most appropriate emergency or rescue service including the RNLI at Southend.
During our visit we were shown and told about the radar and extensive TV cameras maintained as well as the sophisticated binoculars which the Coastwatch team use to spot trouble and the radio channels monitored.
Coastwatch is a national organisation and charity which relies on donations to provide this important rescue service. Hadleigh Castle Rotary is pleased to support NCI by making donations in recent years.
