Support for victims of Myanmar earthquake

Rotary club members hold collection at Tesco store in Watton

Following the horrific earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand, which caused much loss of life and caused widespread homelessness, the Rotary Club wanted to do something to support those people. Tesco in Watton kindly allowed us to hold a collection outside their store, and Paul Weatherill organised a Shelterbox to be displayed including all it's contents.

The charity Shelterbox was formed some 20 years ago by Rotarians in Cornwall, and is able to react very quickly to disasters around the world, by delivering Shelterboxes to disaster zones with the help of local Rotary clubs in the area.

A Shelterbox contains a large tent, cooking equipment, clothing, blankets and all that a family will need to survive for several weeks. Very importantly, it includes a water purifier, which can take dirty water and turn it into potable drinking water.

Our club has donated many Shelterboxes over the years in response to disasters all over the world, and for this we thank the generosity of Watton residents who have always given generously. In the two hours or so we were outside Tesco we collected over £280, which will go a long way towards the cost of a Shelterbox.
