A Lifesaving Legacy: Celebrating 50 Years of Service in 2017
In 2017, to mark 50 years of service to our community, Brynmawr Rotary undertook a project that would leave a lasting and life-saving legacy. Recognising the vital need for accessible emergency equipment, we committed to installing six 24/7 publicly accessible defibrillators across our local area.
This project was never just about placing devices — it was about creating a resilient, community-focused system.
We carefully considered every aspect: sourcing the right equipment, ensuring ongoing support and maintenance, meeting governance and liability requirements, and launching community awareness and training initiatives.
By June 29th, 2018, the first 2 defibrillators were installed, completing a network designed to save lives.
From the outset, we worked in partnership with the Community Heartbeat Trust, widely recognised as the UK’s leading community defibrillation charity. Their expertise and gold-standard approach — endorsed by ambulance services, councils, community groups, and sports governing bodies — ensured that our programme was built on the strongest possible foundations.
We were, and continue to be, passionate about community defibrillation in all its forms.
Currently in 2025 - we have helped install, provided or initiated 6 other machines to be available within the Blaina, Nantyglo and Brynmawr areas.
The initiative has stood as a testament to Brynmawr Rotary’s enduring commitment to public safety, and to building a stronger, better-prepared community for generations to come.
