GUILD HALL VISIT 23rd APRIL 2008
A rearranged change to the Club programme this week resulted in one of most interesting evenings of the year. A kind offer from our Barnstaple town mayor Sue Haywood to have a conducted tour of the Guild Hall and its treasures was too good to miss. Barnstaple Rotary Club's John Wilsher joined us for the evening and gave us an amusing account of the history of the Hall and its contents. Surprisingly, most of the club had never been shown around the Guild Hall before and were highly impressed with the Dodderidge room and the mayor's parlour, both packed full of interesting documents, memorabilia and valuable treasures from the town's long history. A fine buffet, enjoyed in the main hall was followed by our guest speaker Bob Brewer from Torrington who gave an entertaining account of how he came to write his novel 'Final Over'. Unfortunately he hadn't brought enough copies along to satisfy the demand generated by his talk (14 books sold at a tenner a time!).
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable evening and our thanks to Sue & Chris Haywood, John Wilsher and of course George the town beadle who has to protect the mayor's chain of office at all times!
