A report of a presentation by representatives from Doorstep


DOORSTEP.

 

Doorstep is one of the chosen charities of President Mike Carr .Today we had a talk from Julie Walmsley and Jane Imray.

 

Doorstep was founded 23 years ago and provides support and temporary accommodation to young people and young families aged between 16 and 25 who are homeless or who may be at risk of becoming homeless.

 

They have 36 properties which provides single,shared housing and family accommodation. People can also lodge in family homes.Their aim is to prevent homelessness amongst young people wherever possible and to empower them to fulfil their potential and transform their lives.The accommodation is temporary and sometimes they return to the parental home or move onto permanent accommodation.

 

Doorstep also have a drop in centre,and offer support with money,finding work,health and hygiene,social skills and household skills.

 

Some facts.

39% of clients report domestic abuse.

25% of clients have significant debts.

82% are not in training or employment.

Many have a disrupted education.

36% were sleeping rough before contacting Doorstep.

They have 112 clients at any period.

 

Currently they are expanding the unit which has 15 workers (including whole time and part time) and 9 volunteers.
