Andrew Garthwaite's Suzuki GSXR600 Adaption

One of the many projects which emphasizes what Rotary is all about

Andrew Garthwaite's Suzuki GSXR600 Adaption

Thank you so much for the funding of a K-lever 2 adaption that has been done to my GSXR 600.

Back in 2010, I lost my right arm all the way to the shoulder in a rocket attack in Afghanistan whilst in a firefight.  After I had my initial treatment in Camp Bastion I was then flown to Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital for more operations and recovery.  During this time I was thinking very negatively and the thought of never being able to get back on my motorbike made things even worse, until I was introduced to the NABD and became a member.

Initially I had a Weaver Thumb Brake fitted and had this on the bike for just short of 12 months, I could not get comfortable with this adaption as it was awkward and hard to use with a clutch as I was using the thumb brake as my front brake.  So I wrote to the NABD for further help as I had seen the K-Lever in previous magazines and wondered if that would be an adaption suited to myself better.

Within a matter of weeks I received confirmation that I was successful in getting a grant for the K-Lever and that one would be delivered the following day, I was over the moon.  I gave my bike to Bills Motorcycles in Hebburn, Tyne & Wear who has carried out all my adaption work for me in the past and also does my servicing, mots and has been a great help over these difficult pas few years.

I went and picked my bike up 1 day later to try out the new adaption and I must say I feel 100% more comfortable with this fitted and I have only rode 5 mile with it as the weather is getting too bad to ride now.

So come Easter time when I will have my bike out most weekends I will be able to test out this excellent new system properly, and hopefully in time be able to go around the Nurburgring that I have always dreamed about doing.

Thanks again.

Andrew Garthwaite.
