Carly gave up her job as an optician to go to the Congo and volunteer for 2 months on a Mercy Ship.
She gave a vivid portrial of the valuable work done by surgeons, doctors and nurses on the ship.
Her qualification meant she was treating eye disorders. The overwhelming joy of people being able to see after many years of near total blindness was so rewarding for Carly, yet humbling.
Medical experts volunteer for varying lengths of time on the Mercy Ship, some staying for many years.
Security for doctors, patients fearful of being shipped to America as slaves, and illness understood to be the work of the devil, were some of the things Carly was not prepared for before she went, but they were so important for treatment to happen effectively.
Carly was grateful to the Rotary Club of St Andrews giving her a donation to help fund her work on the Mercy Ship.
