Having a Blether - Gordon Smith

One of our members, Gordon Smith kept us all entertained with stories of his life. From being born in the old Maternity Hospital at Castlehill, to his working life in banking. His tales from his early days with the Bank in Aberdeen, Tomintoul, Glenlivet, Brora, Thurso, Tarves and Turriff before coming back to Aberdeen. He described a time when Bankers were respected and knew their customers and the community.
Gordon was a rugby man but one of his stories was about his time as secretary of Brora Rangers Football Club. When the team were short of a player for a cup tie, he was called in as Centre Forward. The mental picture of him accidently scoring goals and being hailed as a hero had us in stitches. Gordon joined Rotary in August 1970 while he was working in Thurso and joined Aberdeen St Machar in August 1973, when he returned to Aberdeen.
