George Kempton's District Conference at Weston has been praised as one of the best ever with a huge attendance over the 3 days and Barnstaple Link contributed marvelously with an impressive turn-out - 29 of us (including partners). The Winter Gardens was a superb choice of venue for all aspects - the Conference itself, the Hall of Friendship and of course the wonderful Ballroom.
The Friday night usually means fancy dress and the 'wild west' theme prompted everyone to go to town with very authentic looking outfits. The main committee and partners all went dressed as red Indians with, of course, George Kempton as the big chief. Saturday was the 'Gala Dinner' night and again another great evening with Link dancers commanding the greater part of the dance-floor all night long.
Our club played a major part in the success with some of our members in key positions on the organizing committee. Lance Allen has spent 100s of hours over the past year dealing with the IT side of things (including being at the mixing desk controlling DVD presentations and sound levels for the whole duration of the Conference). Grahame Davidson was responsible for the promotion & printing including the flyers, sponsorship material, programme and menus. The promotional DVD put together by Lance and Grahame was praised as being the single most effective method of raising the attendance numbers this year.
The thoroughness of the committee's preparation and planning meant that the whole weekend went smoothly and George's conference will be a hard act to follow.
