At the final meeting of his year
David handed over a cheque for £9,519.50 to Abby Parkhouse from
Alzheimer Scotland. This was the sum raised at the Charity Dinner run
by the club's Community Committee chaired by Grant Stephen. The club is
very grateful for the superb support of so many members of the local
community for the way they supported this great event.
As
part of the focus on Dementia, Duns Rotary also took the lead this year
in facilitating the setting up of the Forget-me-not Cafe, a monthly
Dementia friendly cafe, which meets in Duns Parish Church Hall on the
fourth Thursday of each month. All of this just part of another very
full and enjoyable year for the members.
The end of the 40th year was marked with a number of presentations.
Harry Mark was honoured as the Duns Rotarian of the a Year and received the John Denholm Trophy
which had been gifted to Duns by the Rotary Club of Eyemouth, the
'mother' club of 40 years ago. John was Eyemouth President 40 years
ago. Harry has been treasurer for the last three years, and has been a
steady hand on the financial tiller throughout.
Six members received Rotary International Long Service Certificates representing a total of 205 years of Rotary service:
Ken Candlish. 40 years
David Cochrane. 40 years
Grant Stephen. 40 years
Robin Lindsay. 35 years
Ken Fraser. 25 years
Bob Tait. 25 years
Of
these six members, Ken Candlish has been honoured for the role he
played in the process of setting up the club in 1975. Ken had been the
Interim President during the previous year, and stayed on as President
for the first full year. He was also President once more during the mid
80’s and was Rotary District secretary for several years. Ken has been
appointed as the Father of the Club. He received a certificate from the Governor of Rotary District 1020, Alistair Marquis.
In
his handover speech, out- going President David McLuckie thanks his
council member for the magnificent support they had provided throughout
his year of office.
