John Bedford - Farming History

Mon, Nov 23rd 2015 at 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

John Bedford. The Jolly Farmer is a title often seen on Public Houses, but members of the Rotary Club of March, met a real live Jolly Farmer, John Bedford of the Isle of Ely, Guest Speaker on Monday 23rd November 2015. John was introduced by Don Morris, a lifelong friend. Speaking clearly, with much humour, but none the less, honestly, he traced his early day in agriculture on his Father’s farm near Ely. It seems his family roots stretch back to 1645, his ancestors resided in only three different houses during the next 400 years. We heard how he was ‘Helping Dad’ from a very early age, and chose not to claim exemption from National Service, enrolling in the RAF. Wishing to be Pilot, the 2 year allocated was insufficient, and being competent enough to pass the test exams for both mechanical engineering and workshop practice, chose to spend his time on Wireless and Radar, electrical engineering, and unknown subject. This has stood him in good stead ever since. This basic knowledge has enabled his continuation of the family business successfully ever since. His farm in situated in the lofty hills of Ely, in places nearly 50 feet above sea level. As with all honest and entertaining talks time flew by, all too soon. There was little left to question at the conclusion, those attending were treated to an oral gem. A vote of thanks was given by Peter Beckwith, which needed no prompting for the member to respond amicably
