Erin & Rebecca did a visit to the club and gave an insight it their time at RYLA and President Marshall Receives the Citation from the IP District Governor

Duns Rotary Club President, Marshall Wilson, congratulated the speakers at last week’s meeting for giving perhaps the best presentation he has heard at a Club meeting.  The speakers were Rebecca Lyons and Erin-Jane Lauder, the two Berwickshire High School pupils who were sponsored by the club to attend this years Rotary Youth Leaders Award.

Both girls spoke powerfully of the wonderful experience they had enjoyed during their week away.  They talked about their initial nervousness of spending a week with total strangers, combined with a desire to improve their confidence and a willingness to step outside their personal comfort zone. Both girls spoke powerfully of the wonderful experience they had enjoyed during their week away.  They talked about their initial nervousness of spending a week with total strangers, combined with a desire to improve their confidence and a willingness to step outside their personal comfort zone.

They highlighted  learning team building skills, making friendships and developing leadership skills as elements of the RYLA experience which has shaped their personalities and approach to life, and they thanked the Duns Rotary Club for the opportunity which the club had provided.

Both girls encouraged the club to continue to sponsor pupils from BHS year by year, and the club intends to do so.

By way of encouraging Rebecca and Erin, the club presented each girl with a £100 donation to add to their recent fund raising sponsored walk in aid of Polio and the Killin Mountain Rescue Team

Each year since 1991, Rotary Clubs within Rotary District 1020 (covering Central and Southern Scotland) have offered young people, between the ages of 15 and 17, within their communities the opportunity to participate in the unique RYLA experience.

The Aim of RYLA

To encourage the development of teamwork and leadership skills in young people who have the potential to be future community, professional and business leaders.

How is this done?

By making use of a residential experience and outward bound activities to:

  1. create various environments for them to operate in
  2. build team spirit to enable them to work effectively
  3. encourage the recognition and use of skills in others
  4. discover things about themselves
  5. build confidence in themselves and others
  6. encourage and support each other
  7. discuss and establish characteristics of effective leaders
  8. provide leadership opportunities in practical situations
  9. provide opportunities to get involved in service to others

                                                and
by making the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable

Two RYLA weeks take place each year in July – one for boys and one for girls.  They are held at the Abernethy Trust’s Outdoor and Adventure Centre at Ardeonaig, situated midway between Killin and Kenmore, overlooking Loch Tay and the surrounding hills.

The location, the facilities and the staff combine to ensure the ideal mix for an enjoyable and memorable experience from which those participating will derive great benefit.
