Recent Events

Sun July 5th – Alex and Dorothy Cairns had an Open Day at their home in Sandhead in aid of a school in Uganda. Many friends dropped in and helped raise £1,285 for this good cause. Well done Alex and Dorothy!

Mon July 6th - In his first meeting as President, Ronnie Irving welcomed new District Governor Andy Lees who was following in the tradition of his predecessors by starting his tour of the Clubs in our large District at our Club – the most southerly! Andy and his wife Liz are very good friends of our own David and Barbara, all of whom were residents of Tayvallich, Argyll where the Campbell’s brought up their three sons.

Mon July 13thOur usual evening meeting was followed by a very interesting visit to Genoch Farm, where an anaerobic digester has recently been installed. This farm has been improved over the years by the McIntosh family who made the party of 20 Rotarians and 14 guests from Probus very welcome. John McIntosh senior was in attendance as was his son Johnnie and grandson John who ably explained their innovative farming system. An impressive set up!

Mon July 20thFellowship which included a talk by David Kirkwood about Health & Safety, discrimination/equality & protection of children and the vulnerable.

Mon July 27thJohn Munro very ably told us about his 50 years of enjoying rugby well illustrated with clips from memorable Internationals!

Donation Received

The Club has received a very generous donation of £2,000 from Hammy Macmillan. Club Council will discuss how the funds will be used. Members will be advised once a decision has been made.

Rotary District Golf Competition

We entered 3 teams. One of the teams (Gordon Davidson and Henry McFadzean) had to scratch. The other 2 ( John Munro/Neil Fraser and Iain McIntyre/Hugh Parker) have made it to the District final and are due to meet on Sunday 2nd August with the winners going on to represent the District at the national finals.

 Rugby

After Glasgow Warrior’s fantastic season 6 of our members and one member from Kirkcudbright have bought season tickets for next season as have 2 of our regular guests. Other members are welcome to join in for individual matches if tickets can be obtained.  A fixture list will be circulated once available.

On the International scene 8 members and guests will be attending the Ireland v Scotland game in Dublin on 15th August.

Visitors to our Club

We are lucky enough to have members of other Clubs attend our meetings when in this area.

Recent visitors have included Davis Brock, a member of Alloway Club, who has been visiting us for over 40 years while holidaying in the area – see photograph. Another recent visitor was David Brown who is serving his second term as President of Charing Cross, Glasgow club after a 30 year gap. During the meeting he had a good chat with Tom Mitchell. It turned out that they had previously met (probably 1974) when David was manager of the Clydesdale Bank branch in Hamilton and Tom, who was in the Bank’s Inspection Department, had covered for a couple of weeks for David’s deputy who was ill.

 Press Officer

Members should get in touch with Tom Mitchell, in his role as Press Officer, if they have anything they wish included in the Newsletter or reported in the press.

He particularly wishes photographs for publication and/or Club archives.
