Bloodwise
Today we had a talk by Julia Whittaker, the incoming Chairwoman for Bloodwise (formally Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research) Grimsby Branch.
The Grimsby and District Branch was originally founded in 1962, just two years after Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research formed as a charity and has recently had it’s 50th anniversary.
Throughout this time the Branch's volunteer members have tirelessly worked to raise funds to beat blood cancer and have just celebrated having raised £1 million for the charity - an incredible achievement!
The Branch are involved in a great range of fundraising events and activities throughout the year including Golf Days, Bikeathons (8th May this year if anybody is interested) and a Shopping Extravaganza (held at Market Rasen Racecourse), which raises £30,000 a year on average.
At any one time Bloodwise has over £90 million invested in research and is currently funding over 1,000 researchers and clinicians across 220 active research projects, as well as countless more awards to train the research leaders of the future.
Rotarian Bob Barton thanked Julia for a very interesting talk and as a GP commented how he had seen the dramatic improvement in Leukemia management, all down to organisations like Bloodwise. He gave a huge thanks to the Branch on behalf of Grimsby Rotary Club and wished Julia every success for the future.
