Current President Gordon Bulter had nominated the Grimsby Sea Cadets as the main beneficiary this year and Jennifer Parker, Commanding Officer, was presented with a cheque for £3000 to help support the local unit. As an independent charity they rely on the goodwill of local community and businesses for financial support.

Gordon Bulter supports the Sea Cadets, saying that it offers young people amazing opportunities for personal development by learning new skills and working in teams, creating an environment where young people find new confidence and inspiration.

Jennifer presented a short film about the Sea Cadets and talked about how they have a way of taking a young person out of their everyday routine and developing them into a new person expressing talents they never thought they had.

Based on Grimsby Docks and with their boating station just a stone throw away they are able to make the most out of a British summer by taking cadets on the water during regular parade nights. Over 80 cadets can take part in activities such as rowing, kayaking, power boating and sailing.

The Grimsby and Cleethorpes unit runs a syllabus aimed at teaching cadets valuable life skills such as organisation, punctuality, attendance and personal presentation. The instructional volunteers have a wide range of skills and qualifications that ensure the cadets are getting the most out of the facilities and can award internal qualifications in areas such as communications, stewarding, marine engineering, piping (boatswains call) and meteorology.

They also have a marching band that is well known in the local Sea Cadet network for its high quality performances and has been a foundation of the unit for decades. The band is regularly seen out and about the Grimsby and Cleethorpes area at a variety of community activities such as the Mayors Parade and the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade.

President Gordon wished Jennifer every success in the future - a fantastic cause.
