Recent Events
Mon 2nd May -Stewart Forsyth who has recently retired from a senior position at Jordanhill College in Glasgow told us about his plans to help improve men's health. He intends to start classes for the over 45s aimed at encouraging more active lifestyles. There is no doubt that some of our members would benefit!
Monday 9th May – Peter Noreiko, Assistant District Governor, spoke about the need throughout Rotary for a focus on recruitment. This was followed by a very interesting talk by Gordon Davidson titled 'My mother – law's house' – a fascinating story but unable to give more details. Those present will know why!
Mon 16th May -We enjoyed an excellent lunch at our local college – D & G College Stranraer Campus to sample the excellent food prepared and served by their students. This was arranged following our sponsorship for the first time for a candidate in the Young Chef competition. We then had a tour of the facilities and saw and learnt about the many courses which are available. The building is now 28 years old but looks as though opened only a few months ago with no damage or graffiti etc. Well done to all those concerned! There is no doubt that this facility is a great asset to our community. We that should build an ongoing relationship. Excellent photographs taken by Barry Holmes have been circulated by email.
Fri 20th May- Our annual Christian Aid Bread and Cheese Lunch has raised £627 – so far!
Sat 21st May – Thorney Croft Care Home had an open day showing off the garden improvements financed by our Club.
Mon 23rd May – Alan Gordon of Stena gave a very interesting and professional talk about developments in recent years. Stena invested £85M in developing the new terminal at Cairnryan and £120M in new ships for the route. There has been a great focus on staff involvement leading to much improved customer service which in turn has been refl;ected in increased customer satisfaction and profits with the port ahead of its financial targets.
Exemplary Service Award
This is an annual award to a person or persons, selected by the staff and pupils of Stranraer Academy, in recognition of exceptional service to the school and pupils. The recipient is allowed to nominate a charity to receive a donation of £250.This is a joint award this year to Fiona Fay and Stephanie Gosling of the Scotland Reads Programme.
A date for the presentation is still to be arranged.
Rugby
Our group of supporters and friends have made good use of their season tickets to watch Glasgow Warriors throughout the season. Warriors finished 3rd in the league, having been severely hampered by having so many international players unavailable so did not make it to the play off Final last Saturday at Murrayfield. Undaunted a party, including our President and 3 Past Presidents, had a great time at the match supporting Connacht, who had knocked out Glasgow in the semi final, to a great win.
Season tickets are due for renewal in June. Contact Tom Mitchell if you would like to join us!
Mull of Galloway Trail marathon & walk etc- Sat 11th June
So far we have 16 entrants for the long run and 15 for the short run. This is very promising, and in particular if anyone wants to do the walk from Sandhead, it is only 10 miles and easily completed in 3 hours.
The weather is likely to be good and the Trail is in excellent condition, even better than last year.
The usual BBQ will start at 3pm at a cost for members of £5 or £10 inclusive of drinks! A disco will be provided in the evening by John Munro.
We have enough volunteers to get by but any further volunteers (between around 11 and 4) would be welcome, even just for a few hours!
Press Officer
Members should get in touch with Tom Mitchell, in his role as Press Officer, if they have anything they wish included in the Newsletter or reported in the press. He particularly wishes photographs for publication and/or Club archives. We have articles in the Free Press and in our District Magazine on a regular basis. We are in touch with Border TV who are interested in featuring the Mull of Galloway Trail in their Border Life programme.
Defibrillator
Everything is ready to go live except for training which is being organised by the Scottish Ambulance Service. Given the very busy June outlined above, it is likely that the training will take place in July. HAVE YOU REPLIED TO THE EMAIL ABOUT TRAINING?
Galloway Talking Newspaper
Three years ago we donated £2,000 to GTN to help them with a switchover from using tapes to using memory sticks. This conversion was successfully completed last year. GTN now has surplus funds and has kindly refunded the donation!
