Admiral Nurse Sharron Tolman and Namaste Care Lead Nicola Kendall described Dementia Care at the Hospice.

Nicola Kendall and Sharron Tolman from St Cuthbert's Hospice

Sharron Tolman, Admiral Nurse at St. Cuthbert's Hospice (the name was derived from a dementia patient known as 'Admiral Joe'), related to us some key facts about dementia:

  • hospices increasingly taking dementia patients as dementia is a terminal illness
  • dementia does not come alone as most patients have other ailments too
  • more frequent hospital visits and recurring infections are typical in the last stages of dementia
  • spiritual distress is common amongst patients and family who experience emotional turmoil
The aim of the hospice is to identify potential health problems, alleviate them and, eventually, provide palliative care.

Nicola Kendall, Namaste Care Lead (try and find that in a list of jobs on online insurance forms!) explained what Namaste Care was all about:

  • a programme designed to improve the quality of life for people with advanced dementia living at home with a carer
  • trained volunteers provide engagement and sensory stimulation
  • support and teach how to incorporate Namaste Care
