Tour de Furness Presentation Evening

Wed 23rd January 2019 at 18.30 - 20.00

Report and photos from the night when we said thank you to all those who took part in the 2018 ride, and singled out some for a special mention.

The Rotary Club of Furness is over the moon at the level of support behind its popular annual cycle ride.

Tour de Furness committee member Brian Boyd revealed that almost £500,000 has been raised for charity since the event started 24 years ago. In that time cyclists have ridden around 175,000 miles - a bit less than half-way to the moon!

Brian said that this year 324 riders had raised over £30,000, mostly for local charities and good causes, and thanked all the participants, sponsors and supporting organisations.

The Rotarian was speaking at the Tour de Furness presentation night at Barrow Golf Club to celebrate the achievement of those who took part in September 2018.

Tour de Furness committee chairman Dave Salt, a past Rotary Club President, added his thanks to all supporters of the event which has seen St Mary's Hospice as the main beneficiary over the years.

Rotary Club of Furness President Colin Scraggs, said he hoped for better weather and a return to over 400 riders for the event on September 8 later this year.

It was stressed that the Tour de Furness is not a race, but a cycle ride to raise money for worthy causes and the following awards, made by President Colin, were for money raised.

Junior individual second runner-up: Patrick Mulgrew, £105; Junior individual first runner-up: Ben Pascoe, £168.50p; Junior individual winner: William Morrow, £590.00p. The latter also received a special award for winning five of the last six tours in his category, raising around £2,500.

Senior individual second runner up: Faye McKinley, £797.50p; Senior individual first runner up, Chris Chin, £815.00; Senior individual winner: Lee Drury, £937.50p.
