Nightstop Devon provides emergency same day accommodation for 16-25yr olds preventing young people from having to sleep rough. Julian House has seen high levels in youth homelessness so far this year with demand on the project increasing at an alarming rate. Over a nine month period in 2018 Nightstop Devon supported young people on 405 separate occasions to avoid them from having to sleep rough.
So far this year they have already provided 223 emergency bed nights for 16-25 yr olds in Exeter, East and Mid Devon and North Devon.
When a young person is referred to Nightstop, after an assessment with a member of the team, they are offered an emergency bed night with one of their volunteer hosts. All of the hosts are trained, vetted and supported to provide a private bedroom, hot food and breakfast. They are also offered a listening ear or privacy and understanding if the young person wants a quiet space for the evening. The following day the young person is invited back into the Nightstop office to access their current situation and to start finding a more permanent solution. The process may take a few days or even a few weeks. During that time they are supported by the Nightstop team during what is is a verydifficult and troubling time in their young lives.
Despite the cancellation of various fundraising events in the Spring, due to the Covid19 pandemic, the Club raised well in excess of £3000 for Julian House, during the course of the 2019/2020 Rotary year.
We hope to present the final total at some form of ceremony later this year, once we are able to gather with the Julian House representatives.
