/ ROTARY SHOEBOX SCHEME
This project is close to the heart of the Newton-le-Willows club. We have supported the project annually for many years.
Each year our club gets involved in this project which has been running for over 25 years. The project involves filling shoeboxes, the content of which can vary depending on who the recipient is likely to be. There are four categories:
Toys - for boys and girls
Teenagers - up to 18 years of age
Household Goods -for older folks and families
Baby - Age up to 12 months
A full list of suitable content and guidance is provided.
Although the scheme operates throughout the year our club concentrates its effort in October and November in time for delivery at Christmas. The boxes are collected and taken to the central distribution base which is now located in Oldham. This has transferred from the IAT base at Much Hoole in Preston. The shoeboxes go to Eastern Europe and in 2020 deliveries are focused to destinations in Ukraine, Romania and Moldova.
As a club we typically send 45 to 55 boxes per year - last year we sent 53 boxes. Rotarians affix a two pound coin to each box which is a contribution towards transport costs and provides for replacement boxes the following year. All items are donated by individual members of the club, the cost is not borne from genreral club funds.
This is another example of Rotarians getting involved in projects that help less fortunate people around the world. Spreading a little happiness.
