Mon 13th Aug – 6pm - Kenny Paterson’s talk was titled ‘Getting older. Are your affairs in order?’ A very appropriate subject as he stressed the importance of having an up to date Will and Powers of Attorney. He outlined the possible problems of failing to ensure that our affairs are in order and answered various queries.
Sat 18th & Sun 19th Aug – Local Skiff Regatta in Loch Ryan – see report below
Mon 20th Aug –Steve Raphael spoke to us about The Gallowhill Community Woodland Project which he has been involved in since its inception. A large area of land very close to Stranraer has been developed into an amenity forest with the idea of encouraging public access. The public, including our members, have been very slow to take advantage of the excellent walks with the area. Your editor can personally recommend that you should make a point of visiting it!
Mon 27th Aug – 6pm – Eric Wilson demonstrated his ability on the piano by asking members to give him 4 notes and then built/composed a tune around them. He also talked about some of the composers he admired.
Rotary Shirts
It was agreed by Club Council that we buy new Rotary shirts personalised with members names. These are now on sale at a cost of £20. It is hoped that members will help the Club profile by wearing these at events where there is public interaction.
Rugby
Our group of supporters and friends make good use of their season tickets to watch Glasgow Warriors. All of our group of 12 are renewing their season tickets last for next season.
Our season ticket holders are again making their tickets available to Club members for individual matches which they themselves are unable to attend. It is essential that Tom Mitchell is contacted at an early stage before spares are offered to others.
There are home games on Friday 7th September and Saturday 29th September.
Mull of Galloway Trail Marathon
Members will be aware that it was likely that this successful annual event would no longer continue as its increasing popularity has meant that it has grown beyond our ability to safely organise it.
Good news! Gordon Baird is in discussion with someone with the necessary experience to run the event next year. It is still envisaged that we will be involved.
Portpatrick Raft Race
We have run this event on behalf of the RNLI for several years. A good number of members turned out to help and this year was particularly successful with 6 teams in the ladies’ race and 8 in the main race. With the winners of each receiving a prize of £100.
There was great entertainment for the usual large crowd lining the harbour walls.
The collection in aid of the RNLI raised £540 as well as our donation of £100.
Stranraer Coastal Rowing Club – Skiffe Regatta
Lochryan was the focal point for a spectacle of racing when teams from 13 clubs joined our local club in a series of races over 2 days. This is new event as the local club has only recently been formed. They performed well showing ongoing improvement which enabled them to finish 12th overall.
Our Rotary Club and members have played a major role in getting the rowing club up and running and obtaining substantial grants which have enabled the building of a skiffe and the purchase of a supporting rib as well as providing the barbeque and other help on the day.
The event was well run by a combination of the Rowing Club and Stranraer Water Sports Association with much input from Wendi Cuffe from D & G Council and proved to be an excellent rehearsal for the World Championships which will be held in Lochryan next July. It is expected that in excess of 70 boats, each with several teams will be participating Championships and all available accommodation in the area was fully booked some months ago.

· I hate Russian dolls. They’re so full of themselves
· I refused to believe my road worker father was stealing from his job but when I got home all the signs were there!
· My friend keeps trying to convince me that he’s a compulsive liar but I don’t believe him.
