2020 would have marked the 13th anniversary of the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards but sadly, due to Coronavirus and Governement advice, the event has been cancelled for this year. The Awards, whichwould have been organised by BBC Somerset and the Rotary Club of Taunton, with sponsorship from Bridgwater and Taunton College, Carly Press Ltd, Young Somerset and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary and the support of Somerset Day and Tone News is one of the highlights of the year and it is sad that the event will not now take place in 2020.

The Awards celebrate young people across Somerset who have done something to make their family, community and friends proud.

From achievements in the arts, sports, music and academically to caring for others and the enviroment, to overcoming personal adversity and hardship and making a difference to their community through volunteering: the awards recognise any young person in the County who displays tremendous generosity, courage and passion.

Lead organiser Rotarian Peter Renshaw said, 'there have been some amazing young people over the last 12 years and the Rotary Club of Taunton is proud to have been able to celebrate their achievements. We are devestated the event will not now go ahead, but be assured we hope to run this event in 2021.'

This year's ceremony would have been hosted by BBC Somerset presenters Claire Carter and Simon Parkin. Speaking in preparation for this year's event Claire had said, 'I am always blown away by the stories we unearth through these awards. I believe now, more than ever, that we not only need to encourage future generations to be passionate about what they love and achieve, but also shine a light on what they do and make a fuss of them!'

President Tony Cox spoke of his regret about the cancellation of this year's event.

'The Pride of Somerset Youth Awards evening is a highlight in our Rotary calendar. Every year we have attracted an amazing selection of young people from across the County. Each nominee has been a hero in their own right and it has been a privilege to shine a light on their outstanding achievements. The triumph over adversity shown by some young people is truly humbling and it has meant so much to them and their families to be recognised. I am so disappointed the event is not going ahead but I feel sure we will be back next year with some even greater stories to tell.'

Applications have been halted for this year but current nominations will be carried through to next year.
