The team are well known for their work in discovering why some breast cancers become resistant to some forms of oestrogen therapy. They are working with colleagues at Cardiff University to better understand the effect of new treatments and how the cancer cells may change over time.
Research funded by the Velindre Breast Cancer Research has supported six research fellows. The focus of their research on the cellular mechanisms on how the cancer was able to go on to develop secondary cancers had led to the development of clinical trials in which Velindre was currently involved. An example of cancer research leading directly to improved treatments for cancers. Due to social distancing regulations there was no presentation of the money raised in 2020, but a bank transfer of £11833 was made.
Rotary Monmouth, in conjunction with Chepstow and Ross on Wye Rotary Clubs, has organised and run the Walk The Wye event for the last 12 years, raising funds for breast cancer research. In those 12 years, they have raised just over £121,000 for the Velindre breast cancer research team.
75% of the funds raised in 2020 were donated to the Velindre Cancer Centre at Cardiff, and 25% will go to other charities supported by the Rotary Clubs of Monmouth, Chepstow and Ross on Wye.
