Students are encouraged to develop their own projects within the general theme of Climate Change/Carbon Reduction as it relates to their school environment.

Aims and Objectives

To encourage young people to explore, investigate, research and undertake an environmental sustainability project on the theme of  ‘Climate Change/Carbon Reduction’ as it relates to their School Environment. 
Students in the older age group are encouraged to explore and develop new concepts other than those other than those regularly reported in the popular press.

Who can take part?

The competition is open to all schools and college communities and those who are home educated, along with any other young people's community organisations, for example: Scout Groups, Girl Guides, Brownies, church groups.

There are three age groups:

  • Junior:            School Years 4-6
  • Intermediate: School Years 7-9
  • Senior:            School Years 10-12

Competition Guidelines

Task

Produce a project on the theme of ‘Climate Change/Carbon Reduction’ as it relates to their School Environment. Students in the older age group are encouraged to explore and develop new concepts other than those regularly reported in the popular press.

Outcomes

Projects should be eye catching, present a balanced viewpoint exhibiting understanding of the environmental problem, and showcase a solution or suggest an innovative new idea for solving the environmental issue.

Presentation

The project is to be presented in the student’s chosen format.

These could include:

  • An Informative poster
  • Written and illustrated submissions
  • Photographic or artistic presentations*
  • Audio or video reports*
  • A tangible product such as an App for smart phone

IMPORTANT RESTRICTIONS TO NOTE: Please note that entries and supporting information sent electronically MUST NOT EXCEED 10Mb per email sent. Please send larger files by file transfer.
Participants may also leave their entries at the Reception desk in their school. Entries will be collected from there and returned there once the judging has taken place

Judges

Evidence of thorough and focussed research must be shown. The best projects will show originality of thought and of the interpretation of the research. Outcomes and suggested solutions must be clearly indicated. 

  • Is your project easy to follow and understand?
  • What would be the benefit of the project to your school community? 
  • What problems or issues might your ideas encounter? 
  • Are your ideas likely to be cost effective? 

Prizes

At all levels of the competition, competitors will receive a certificate of participation. Winners’ photographs will be displayed on the Rotary Monmouth website and in the local paper*.

Junior:                First prize £25
                            Runner up £15
Intermediate:     First prize £50
                            Runner up £25
Senior:                First prize £50
                            Runner up £25

How to enter

Entrants are required to complete and submit an entry form. The submission process will be emailed to your parent. Submissions must be received by the Rotary Monmouth Youth and Education Team by the closing date, April 23rd 2021.
