For over 20 years, Rotary Club of Melton Mowbray Belvoir have organised Santa's Sleigh to bring cheer to the young (and young at heart) of Melton. For months this year, the club worked on health and safety plans to align with Covid conditions.
However, with the latest Covid restrictions and being mindful most of our members have been involved in the Sleigh for the last 20 years, it with heavy heart, we decided, it was in everyone’s best interest we did not bring out our sleigh this year. We know how much everyone looks forward to Santa, our decision was made a lot easier, knowing Trumpton and The Round Table do not have the same constraint as ourselves and will be out with their Sleighs, and we send them our best wishes
This year, we knew that money collection during Santa's Sleigh was out of the question. Still, club members are determined not to disappoint with so much else of Christmas being cancelled. This was a way of bringing some joy and excitement into the lives of people in the town after months of restrictions and worry about COVID-19. We are happy to share that we will replace it this year with a virtual Christmas Photo contest in conjunction with the Council.
In normal years, Santa's Sleigh has been a main contributor to fund-raising, 100% of which is used to support people in need. The club supports Dove Cottage, Home-Start, StoreHouse and individual cases of people in need in the community. It also supports the eradication of polio, Shelterbox and the rebuilding of a school in Nepal after natural disasters. The club prides itself on being there for those in need, especially in our community, from helping out with nails and hammers and a paintbrush to getting a wheelchair lift for a local person.
Meanwhile, if you would like to be part of the spirit of Rotary, there are two ways you can do this. One is by considering a donation to help replace our Santa Sleigh normal funds. The second is to join Rotary! Anyone with a big heart is welcome.
