Centenary of Rotary in Cambridge

We and our colleagues in the three other Cambridge clubs celebrated 100 years of Rotary service in 2022

The Rotary Club of Cambridge was founded on 28 September 1922, and we had a year of special events and projects. The other three local clubs, Cambridge South, Cambridge Rutherford and Cambridge Sawston, joined the celebrations.

Christ's Pieces Lantern
One major project was the installation of a new street lamp to improve safety in a previously dark area in the centre of Christ's Pieces, Cambridge. The other three Rotary Clubs all contributed to the cost. We also received funding from Cambridge City and Cambridgeshire County Councils, Balfour Beatty the contractor, Wesley Methodist Church and Emmanuel College

The lamp was installed in early February and its carved stone base was added in March. Dame Fiona Reynolds, until recently Master of Emmanuel College, unveiled it formally at a ceremony on 5 May, in the presence of the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, the Mayor of Cambridge and the Police & Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire.  Please see the photos above - click on them to enlarge

'Classic Cambridge' Special Edition
Tim Rawle, the well-known local photographer, is allowed us to produce a Rotary Centenary edition of his book of fabulous images of Cambridge, with the sale proceeds going to Cambridge Aid, the charity that does so much to help local people in financial crisis. Tree Planting with Treekly Several club members and their friends and relatives have signed up to this project to restore mangrove swamps in Madagascar, which has suffered 90% deforestation. These will sequester CO2 to reduce the effects of global heating.
