International evening in Bolton raises £500 for good causes

Speakers from two key charities helping to alleviate poverty and deprivation in the UK and Africa have delivered impassioned messages for support at a special international evening in Bolton.

They included Marian Sapcote from the Scotland-based Smalls for All charity, which collects and donates new underpants and knickers and gently worn bras to the needy.

Marian told the evening, organised by Bolton Lever and Turton Rotary clubs, that while underwear is taken for granted in western society, for many people in poorer parts of Africa and even the UK, it is "a luxury that is not easily available".

The charity has been inundated with donations since its launch and has now been located at: Smalls for All, Five Sisters Business Park, Westwood, West Calder, EH55 8PN, where donations can be sent.

Also addressing the meeting at the Old Links Golf Club were Liz Skilling and Anne McNicholson who are ambassadors for Project Harar in the UK.

The charity works in the most disadvantaged and remote areas of Ethiopia, to provide access to treatment for children affected cleft lip and palate and more complex facial disfigurements.

Anne said: "The conditions impact child development and are the source of stigma and exclusion in rural communities.

"Geographical constraints and the cost of reaching the capital make it impossible for the vast majority of families to reach treatment without our services."

The evening was part of the effort by the clubs to raise cash for the Rotary Foundation, a non-profit corporation which raises money for good causes across the globe.

At the end of the evening, £500 was donated to Smalls for All, made up of £100 each from Bolton Lever, Turton and Westhoughton Rotary clubs with an additional £200 from Rotary Foundation.

Bolton Lever president-elect Christopher Hill said: "Members and guests were in awe of the work being done by both charities and it is such an honour to be able to support their life changing work through our Rotary clubs".
