Occasional golfer Bob defies the odds to win the Paul Wellman Trophy

Friday 20th May saw a number of foolhardy members of the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill venture out to Three Rivers Golf and Country Club at Stow Maries to contest the club’s annual Paul Wellman Memorial Trophy.

The competition was played in somewhat trying weather conditions with persistent rain making playing conditions a consistent challenge, to the extent that the majority of the contestants decided to call a halt to the punishment after only nine holes. A few brave souls carried on to complete eighteen holes.

Back in the clubhouse, after drying out and fortifying themselves with a meal and a drink, it was decided to settle the competition by only counting the first nine holes.
The surprise winner was, occasional golfer Bob Taylor, with John Fairweather taking the prize for the longest drive and visitor, Bruce Broadbent, winning the prize for Nearest the Pin.
Despite the dreary, dismal, damp conditions, all the contestants enjoyed the light-hearted competition, in memory of former member of the club, the late Paul Wellman, in an occasion that he would surely have seen the funny side of.
All the members enjoyed their day and look forward to next year’s competition, which, hopefully, will be blessed with better weather.
