New sensory room for Leisure Centre is now over 80% towards its target

Three Rotary clubs in the town are helping this important project

The dream of a new sensory room at Barrow Leisure Centure is a step closer to its target following a generous donation by the Rotary Club of Furness Peninsula, following the efforts of some of its members who walked a section of Hadrians Wall.

This means that all three Rotary clubs in the town have made sizeable donations to the fund.

As Rotarians Fred and Peter show, the fundraising has now reached over £8000, towards the target of £10,000.

For many years those in need in the Barrow area benefited from a sensory room in Barrow Leisure Centre, but unfortunately it had to be closed for safety reasons. The Rotary Club of Furness stepped in to kick-start a campaign to bring the room back into action with a donation of over £2000 which will buy a bubble tube corner.

The Centre is no longer in Council ownership. It now belongs to a non-for-profit organisation.

Members from the Rotary Club of Furness Peninsula have also joined the campaign, taking part in a sponsored walk on Hadrians Wall!

There are also plans for a bucket collection at Tesco Extra and there is a Just Giving page - see below.

A sensory room is a specially designed room which combines a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their natural senses. These can include lights, colours, sounds, sensory soft playresources and aromas, all used within a safe environment that allows the person using it to explore and interact without risk.

There are many benefits of a sensory room for those who have learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or sensory processing impairments, helping them learn to interact with the world around them in a safe environment that builds up their confidence and their ability.

The user gets an unrestrained, non-threatening space where they can explore at their own leisure, and this freedom lets their teacher, therapist or carer see what calms them, rouses them and what they do or don’t like.
