  • Our members and guests gathered, some in 60s and 70s attire, at West Bradford Golf Club for a President’s Evening with a difference.
  • After a splendid meal we were taken back to the 60s and 70s with entertainment by the talented Julie Dee.
  • Present were four of the six young men who not only completed a tremendous challenge, but raised almost £25,500 for the Motor Neurone Association in the process.
  • We were delighted that District Governor Malcolm Tagg and his wife Judith were able to join us to present the awards.
  • The other two young men will receive their awards at a later date.

You can donate to their cause here.

Fund raising for Motor Neurone Disease.

Two years ago, our Rotary District 1040 agreed to work with MND and the Leeds Hospital Trust to help and support their fundraising campaign.

One of our Rotarians, Brain Winterbottom of The Rotary Club of Bradford West, brought to our attention a remarkable challenge that six young men had set themselves. One of these men is the grandson of Brian, Tomas Firth, who with the five other men set themselves the challenge of doing "The Three Peaks" Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in The Lake District and Snowden in North Wales. They were inspired to take on this challenge after Lawrence Waite's father, Martin Waite died after a long battle with MND. The other young men were Joseph Walton, Louis Bluckert, Steven Goostrey and Richard Jeffries. The challenge was indertaken from 31st July to 6th August 2022, ascending Ben Nevis in Scotland then five of them cycling between the other two peaks, the sixth man driving a support vehicle.

This epic feat was done as a fund raising exercise and so far has raised £25,467.50 for MND, including a 25% gift aid claim.

In recognition of this amazing achievement District Governor Malcolm Tagg  made presentations of Paul Harris Fellowships, the highest award given for exceptional contributions to society by Rotary International, to all six young men.
