Garden Story 6

Story of 501 North Deeside Road, Cults

The house was built on a plot in 1879 sloping gently down from the North Deeside Road to the Deeside Railway Line.   With Queen Victoria travelling on the DR up to Ballater and on to Balmoral, the house front faces the railway line rather than the road so that the Queen would not see washing on the line at the back of the house.   The DR was closed in 1966 and hedges and trees have grown obscuring the house from the railway line.
We bought the house in 1990 and inherited a “wild” garden.   It had many features/ plants from previous owners but the immediate owner from us was called away from home due to work commitments much of the time before we bought and the garden suffered.   Such a large garden of nearly a third of an acre has taken many years to retrieve from much of the wildness.
Flower beds and borders and vegetable beds are now reasonably kept although ground elder is still an issue in some parts.   Self set trees were removed and a greenhouse has been added three years ago.   Hedges are still a major hurdle to keep trimmed each year.   Rhododendrons would reach the sky if not cut back severely every 4 – 5 years.   Please try to overlook the shed which is needing to be replaced having been moved to its present site some 12 – 15 years ago and also the gap in the ha-ha due to a very large stone becoming displaced last year.
I am a great believer in plant propagation and some offsets,  cuttings and seedlings will be for sale on the day, all potted up with home-made compost.
