Our 7th very successful Young Musician competition was held on 22nd April at Bishop’s Stortford College. 150 young musicians in 3 age groups and 5 instrumental categories - with most local primary and secondary schools represented - competed during the day to win their class. The 15 winners then competed in the evening concert for the Overall Junior, Intermediate and Senior awards, and the two supreme prizes of Young Musician (Instrumental) and Young Vocalist of the Year.
The three overall age group winners were Samuel Creecy (trumpet), The Bishop’s Stortford High School; Kohana Fish (cello), Hockerill Anglo European College and Fred Blackshaw (clarinet), Bishop’s Stortford College. The Young Musician prize also went to Fred Blackshaw, and the Young Vocalist winner was Marcus Chan from Herts & Essex High School. Both will now take part in the Rotary District 1240 Young Musician Final next February.
This was our 7th competition since 2015, as we lost two years to COVID. But it’s now running at full steam again. It was a very happy day and a chance to hear our local musicians playing to a very high standard.
Next year’s competition will be on Saturday 20th April 2024.
