Rucksacks for the Homeless

Shelter Bag Project

Since early 2021 we have been running The Shelter Bag Project providing self-contained emergency kits for homeless rough sleepers. A holdall containing a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, torch, warm underwear, toiletries and sanitary items.

We began distributing the bags through our local foodbank, Storehouse, and Sage Cross Methodist Church’s community project. We then spread the distribution to Leicester and Loughborough. The bags were a great success and in demand.
We needed more bags urgently and were delighted when we received a Magic Little Grant of £500 through the partnership between Localgiving and Postcode Places Trust. Postcode Places Trust is a grant-giving charity funded by players of the People's Postcode Lottery.
Localgiving is the UK’s leading membership and support network for local charities and community groups.

So far, we have provided emergency survival kits to 33 people who were having to sleep rough in shop doorways or on park benches.  It has been a tough winter for some! We could not have done all of this without the support of the People’s Postcode Trust.
