Edukid: Evie Wood on Cambodia Visit

Evie, supported by her leader Sophie Gilbert, gave the Club a presentation

Written by Mike Palmer

Following an agreement by our Youth Committee for the Club to supply funding to Edutec, for Evie Wood to visit Cambodia in July 2023, Evie, supported by her leader Sophie Gilbert, gave the Club a presentation on 14th September. The background is that Cambodia is one the poorest Countries in Asia, population less than 16 million, with 14% below the poverty line.

There was a civil war in the 1970s, and Evie was part of the party visiting the museum, which included a mass grave site. She said it brought home to her the current war conflict in Ukraine.

During the group’s visit, they visited ancient temples, which included many detailed carvings, including the flying of the “Angkor Vat”, the national flag.

The group also visited 5 villages. She said that most young people love art, and enjoyed playing games and sports, which Evie also enjoyed.

She also told us that she was taught cooking during her visits. She also visited a Cambodian home where the mother Mao, spoke to them about how she struggled to feed her children every day, and to get them to school regularly.

Through Edutec and CFC as a group, they donated funds to Mao, agreeing with her on how to utilise the money. Evie told us that she had built many relationships, during her time in Cambodia, and she would like to revisit one day.

The trip held many memories for Evie, which she will never forget.
