Dr. Joan Megson from Zero Carbon Moray, gave us a very informative talk about Fuel poverty and Zero Carbon Moray’s intriguing idea of how to help with the cost of energy in the Moray area. Moray has been their focus as the volunteer members of Zero Carbon Moray live in the area and Moray is one of the areas of Scotland with the highest percentage of residents living in fuel poverty.

Joan told us of their plans to install community owned solar farms on local, leased or purchased, land which will feed electricity into the national grid. Community members of the scheme that are provided their electricity at the same sub station as the solar farm feeds into, will receive their electricity at a reduced rate per unit used. Joan also advised that the place to go for advice and funding on energy matters was ‘Home Energy Scotland’. We look forward to hearing how the project progresses, at present they are looking for funding to employ a person full time to move the project forward through the next crucial stages.
