In 2005 both Rotary International and the Lee on the Solent Golf Club celebrated their centenaries. Barry Williams, who was a Member of the Golf Club and President of Fareham Meon Rotary Club that year, suggested that in order to celebrate their joint 100th anniversaries, Fareham Meon Rotary should present the Golf Club with a trophy, to be awarded annually to the Junior who had most improved during the year.
The Penny Farthing design, which shows the crests of both Clubs in the two wheels, was eventually agreed on and it was also agreed that the winning Junior should be presented with a smaller trophy, that he or she could keep, showing an imprint of the Penny Farthing and the year that it was awarded. We originally presented 10 smaller trophies and when these ran out in 2015, we presented an additional 10. These have now run out (2 were presented last year as there were two worthy winners) and we have just presented another 10 which should take us through until 2034 !
It was also agreed by both Clubs that the current President of Fareham Meon Rotary should present the Trophy and the smaller replica each year at the annual prize giving organised by the Golf Club, which normally takes place in November.
