Renewable Energy and the Community

Hydro Electricity etc

Renewable Energy and the Communit

The speaker at our meeting on 21st March was our own member John Blowes, who  used the definition of renewable energy as "Energy from sources that are naturally replenishing". These sources are energy from the Rainwater, Sun and Wind. John mentioned that in Scotland new housing developments are fitting roof mounted solar panels. Air source  and ground source heat pumps are a way of providing domestic heating thus avoiding the burning of gas in boilers.

From the outset, John has been involved with Halton Lune Hydro Limited. This generating plant takes water from the River Lune and feeds it into two turbines coupled to two generators. The electricity produced is fed to the Lancaster Cohousing with surplus to the Grid. The surplus income goes to the Halton Lune Trust provide public benefits to the community of Halton and Aughton Parish. As part of the project fish entering the fish pass are automatically counted and can be temporarily held for scientific investigations.
