Goodbye Chris Cutting

On 10th December the Rotary Club of Taunton said Goodbye to one of its longstanding and exemplary members Dr. Chris Cutting.

The Rotary Club of Taunton has said farewell to one of its most esteemed members, Chris Cutting. In December 2024, after almost 50 years of commitment, Chris is set to relocate to Yorkshire, leaving behind a profound legacy that will continue to inspire Rotarians and the wider community alike.

Chris Cutting’s journey with the Rotary Club began in 1976. From day one, Chris embodied the Rotary ideals through his relentless work with the Rotary Foundation and International projects. His leadership in initiatives that have transformed lives and his ability to navigate complex challenges have left an indelible mark both locally and globally.

A Paul Harris Fellow, Chris was already recognised among Rotarians for his exceptional contributions. However, in a personal gesture, the Rotary Club of Taunton has bestowed upon Chris a second Paul Harris Fellowship Award. This rare honour underscores the extraordinary impact Chris has had on the club and the countless individuals with whom he has come into contact.

Beyond his Rotary commitments, Chris has been a pillar in the community. Born in South India, Chris’s early life was shaped by his father’s work as a Medical Superintendent and surgeon at a small Christian hospital in Chickballapur. His education at Eltham College and later at Edinburgh University, where he earned his medical degree and fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons, laid the foundation for his distinguished career in medicine at Musgrove Park Hospital.

In the 1960s, Chris married Jean, a trained nurse, and together they served at mission hospitals in Nazareth and South India before Chris took up a pivotal role at Musgrove in Taunton in 1972. His leadership in emergency medicine, including his tenure as National President of the British Association of Emergency Medicine from 1995 to 1998, has been impressive.

Chris’s contributions extend beyond medicine and Rotary. He has amongst other things, served as President of the League of Friends of Musgrove Park Hospital, Vice President of Cancer Research UK Taunton, Assistant District Governor for Rotary District 1200, Governor at Queen's College, Trustee of Taunton Heritage Trust and Taunton Food Bank, and a dedicated supporter of the United Reformed Church.

As Chris embarks on this new chapter, the Rotary Club of Taunton celebrates his selflessness, leadership, and enduring commitment to service. His legacy, woven into the fabric of the club, will continue to inspire future generations of Rotarians. On behalf of the entire club, we extend our deepest gratitude and wish Chris all the best in his future endeavours.
