Oswestry Community Games to return this September. Mike and Mike have a Rotary stall

Organisers have announced that the Oswestry Community Games will again be held in Cae Glas Park this year on Sunday 20 September from 11am – 4.30pm.

With over 40 local organisations covering sport and the arts already signed up to deliver on the day, the Games will be bigger and have more variety than last year’s which saw around 1000 people of all ages taking part and having fun in the park. The Games is designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to have fun and to become more active in physical and cultural activities on offer locally. Organisers are thrilled to announce that Amy Hughes, our local 53 Marathons lady and recent London Marathon runner will be our Guest of Honour, and having such an inspirational role model to lead on the day will make it very special.

We are also very pleased to report that following Oswestry Rotary Club’s Mary Hignett Bequest Fund's agreement to sponsor participants’ medals, we now have Lanyon Bowdler – a local firm of solicitors coming on board, which will be another boost to our funds to cover the costs of the day. Amy Hughes said: “I am delighted to accept the invitation to be this year’s Guest of Honour for the Oswestry Community Games. I note the Games including Arts, is now in its third year and is growing each year and I very much look forward to playing my part in it. You may be aware that I have recently set up the 53 Foundation to raise money to help people with disabilities to be more active. I am also delighted that this will be the Charity which the Community Games will support on the day. I therefore look forward to meeting everyone who made this event happen and participants on the day.”

Amanda Jones of Lanyon Bowdler said: “Lanyon Bowdler has offices across Shropshire including one in Oswestry, and we are proud to be helping the Oswestry Community Games with some financial assistance. “Our staff will be there to support the Games, its participants, and take part in the activities on the day.”

Last year, Oswestry Community Games was recognised as one of the top six in the country by the national Community Games organisation, which was very encouraging, especially given that it was only the second year it had run. This is a hard act to follow, but organisers feel confident even at this stage, that what will be on offer on the day will more than match last year’s Games.

Oswestry Community Games comes from the Olympics /Paralympics 2012 is a celebration of what is good about Oswestry and our interpretation of local event for local people and local organisations, and for people to have FUN!

It started in 2013 as a pilot event, and in 2014 we combined with Oswestry and District Arts Association to bring that aspect in addition to physical activity to the Games. Last year we had around 1000 people of all ages and abilities in Cae Glas Park in the centre of Oswestry with Derwen College, North Shropshire Special Olympics, and Cricket Federation for Disabilities being deliverers, and Nick Beighton - Paralympic Rower and Invictus Games medallist was our guest of honour.

On Sunday 20th September 2015, from 11 am – 4.30 pm, we will have the three above plus Wheels for All in the first half of the day on the tennis courts. There will be over 30 local organisations involved on the day providing demonstrations and activities for visitors in "Have a go" sessions.

Our guest of honour is local lady Amy Hughes who completed 53 marathons in 53 days.

Master of Ceremonies will be local actor Malcolm Lord. Malcolm said “I am delighted to be master of ceremonies for this year's Oswestry Community Games. My school report for PE & games stated “although success is limited, Malcolm tries hard” which is important. It does not matter whether you are first or last-it is the taking part that matters. So instead of chasing aliens on iPads, lets all put them down & have a go”.

With more organisations taking part than last year (for a list go to Oswestry Community

) it promises to be another successful and busy day, always subject to the vagaries of the weather!
