Our Club's 87th Charter Night, held this year at Oswestry Cricket Club

The Rotary Club of Oswestry recently celebrated its 87th Charter anniversary with a dinner held at Oswestry Cricket Club.

Visitors and guests from other Rotary Clubs in their District were welcomed. This year Wrexham, Southport, Llangollen and, of course, the three Oswestry clubs were represented. With over 90 club members, guests and visiting Rotarians, the diners enjoyed speeches from President Mike Griffiths, District Governor Chris Sumner, President Elect Ian Haigh and finally, the evening's special guest speaker, Amy Hughes.

In a surprise part of the evening's events, DG Chris Sumner was delighted to award Rotarian John Thompson with the respected Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship.  In presenting John with this award, the Club recognises John's dedication to the Club, in particular his work on the Mock Interviews that the Club undertakes each year with The Marches Academy's Year 11 students and his direction and scripting of the Internet Safety Scenario at the Club's LifeLine event for Year 6 pupils at Park Hall each year.

West Felton's own Amy Hughes, runner of 53 marathons in 53 days in 2014 raising over £53,000 for charity, then delighted her audience with a quick run through of how she went from being the child in school who 'hated sport and always forgot her games kit' to a young woman who fell in love with running and the health benefits it brought her.

Determined to prove to people that, like her, anyone can start running or doing any form of sport at any age, Amy has set up the 53 Foundation to help disabled people get into sport and this is now the focus of her fundraising.  Amy, who now lives in Manchester, is honoured to work for The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and also finds time to model for Panache lingerie.

The Club now looks forward its next event which is the Health Awareness Day at Oswestry Library on Saturday 23rd April from 10.00 to 14.00 - all welcome!
