Explorers are the 4th section of the Scouting Movement catering for 14 to 18 year olds, aiming to provide a flexible and active Scouting programme for adolescents, with an emphasis on personal challenge and adventure. Whilst Beavers, Cubs and Scouts run as a ‘Group’ in Four Crosses, the Explorer Unit is ‘attached’ to this group in name only and must raise their own funds for their own activities and equipment. Although Explorers can, and do, borrow some of the Scout equipment this is limited due to the more adventurous activities done by the older Explorers and them generally being bigger and older.
The activity has developed further as Chris has been permitted, as an assessor within Scouts, to train some of the older Explorers to run their own Archery Sessions. The original equipment purchased has been added to with more bows (especially for younger children), targets and stands, arrows, braces and finger gloves.
"It has been a long time since March 2015 when we bought the equipment and we have done a lot. It has been used many times by many different groups, as can be seen from the list below." Chris explains.

The Four Crosses Explorer Unit has grown since last March from 9 to currently 18 with 6 more expected to move up from Scouts in January, making them the biggest in Montgomeryshire and they have worked hard to raise funds for other equipment such as cookers, light weight tents and compasses needed as members work towards the Explorers Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
We look forward to hearing news of their further development.
