A BUTCHER'S TALE

It took a lot of persuading but Chew Magna butcher Clifford Pearce finally agreed to give a talk to members of Chelwood Rotary Club on the history of his family, which went down a storm at the club meeting.
As a thank you they have presented him with a framed photo,  taken by club president Vic Clarke, and included in his presentation.
Mr Clarke said : “I approached Clifford in the summer and suggested that he had a good story to tell and would he give a talk to our Rotary. Initially, he was apprehensive because he had never given a talk before but, after a few beers in the Bear and Swan, he agreed. We met a couple of times in the pub in the following weeks and together agreed the content and photos for the presentation.
He gave his talk which was an instant success.
Next year will mark one hundred years of his family business being in Chew Magna. His grandfather, father, and brother worked in the business and now his son Mark helps out there too.
His grandfather, also Clifford Henry Pearce, originally set up his butcher’s business in Winford before the first world war, but when he returned from war in 1918, he found that another butcher was running a business in Winford and he therefore decided to set up another butcher’s business in Chew Magna, and the rest is history..
And what better day than his birthday to present him with his photo – it was his 65th birthday!
